“All of us have moments in our lives that test our courage. Taking children into a house with a white carpet is one of them.” – Erma Bombeck
Courage and colour choice notwithstanding, many of us decide to go with wood flooring in at least some of the rooms in our houses, avoiding persistent stains and other hassles associated with wall-to-wall carpeting. Moreover, wood flooring with a few well-placed area rugs is arguably a more sophisticated option; it’s also suitable for most rooms, with the exception of the bathroom.
Wood flooring of many widths and finishes can bring a warm look to any room. There are two kinds of wood flooring available: solid hardwood floors that are made from types of natural wood, and engineered wood floors that are made from layers of laminate or plywood.
Of course, each type of flooring has its pros and cons. Solid hardwood flooring is durable and can normally stand up to sanding and multiple refinishing jobs, but it is also susceptible to moisture. Engineered wood flooring, which is made up of many layers of pressed plywood, laminate or high-density fiber and finished with a thin layer of natural wood, is generally less expensive than solid hardwood flooring. The engineered variety is also relatively easy to repair.
