If you are thinking about going through a renovation in your home, choosing a professional to take care of a renovation project is one of the key steps for a positive outcome. Major renovations give a new perspective to your property. They add value and help you adapt your home to any change in lifestyle you are going through or preparing for, such as adding a room, enhancing your kitchen, developing your basement, or just refreshing your home's look.

One of our homeowners' most frequent questions is whether a renovation or new build is the path for them to go. At Sunset Homes, we are major renovators, and we are proud of taking care of your needs as custom builders. Also, one of our primary goals is to guide our homeowners by providing as much information as possible so that they can take informed decisions for their projects. Here is a list of things to go through and discuss with your home builder for your home renovation.

Understanding your Major Renovation Idea

Depending on your needs, meeting at your existing home to listen to your thoughts is an excellent first step. Usually, your home builder will put together a team in which design, measurement, and site inspection can be done at your home to gather all the necessary information and to be able to create the scope of work and design for your major renovation.

For this first meeting, it is helpful to bring any visual help that you can provide, such as Houzz ideabooks, pictures, sketches, or any inspirational materials. This will aid your custom home builder when working on your design and budget.

Creating a Design and Budget for Your Renovation Project

After understanding your main idea for renovating, the next step would be to revise the feasibility of your idea and create preliminary drawings to be reviewed along with your designer and custom home builder. Once you go through the revision process and get to the final design, your home builder will determine which building materials, suppliers and sub-trades your project will need. Once that is sorted, at Sunset Homes, we will prepare you a detailed quote for you to study and proceed with your renovation.

Timeline and Rebuild
After your design and budget are defined, a timeline including all necessary permits and documentation will be processed to be able to start with our renovation. With a timeline in place, you can plan either to live at home while going through your renovation or relocate for parts, or the duration, of the renovation. Keep in mind that for some renovations such as kitchen renovations some services might need to be disconnected in case a structure needs to be removed.

Major Renovation Accomplished

Upon completing your renovation, your custom home builder will clean the job site, conduct a final inspection and invite you for a final walk-through. If all details are in order, you will be able to enjoy your brand new space at home.
