How Long Does it Take to Build a Home with Sunset Homes Part I

One of the main concerns homeowners have when considering building a custom home is the time it may take to be completed. With custom infill homes, the completion time will depend on the size and complexity of the home’s design, as well as the weather conditions and the location or area in which the custom home will be built.

Single or multi-family custom homes

At Sunset Homes, Calgary’s bespoke home builder, based on our experience and organization from the size point of view for our single detached custom homes your construction project’s schedule might be running between 8 to 10 months.

To build a duplex it takes between 10 to 12 months, a triplex between 11 to 13 months and for a fourplex 12 to 14 months. These times might vary depending on the square footage of each home. Discuss with your home builder and ask them to provide a clear schedule of your project.

At Sunset Homes we use online software to organize our construction projects and our clients can follow their project schedule and completed tasks in real time. Check out our educational process videos and more information about this software here. Breaking down the construction process, each phase will take different times.

Pre-construction and design stage
Depending on every client this stage can take between 2 and 4 weeks. This is when the future homeowners and the custom home builder have the chance to talk about the vision for the custom home. In our initial meeting, we try to figure out answers to questions and details such as: How many square feet do we want or need? Where should the master bathroom be facing? How will the rooms be distributed in the house?

The following step is having a Schematic Design Meeting in which the homeowner, the custom home builder and the design team see a first visual approximation to your home and start working on all the changes and additions. Paperwork and selections prior to construction

Once you have finalized all revisions of your design and we have our DP drawings, we apply for a Development Permit. This process might take between 4 and 6 weeks. Once your DP is approved we meet with you to start making your selections.

Your selections entail interior colours and materials for details such as: plumbing and electrical fixtures, fireplace, flooring, carpet, hardwood, tiles, backsplash, countertops, cabinetry, and stairs. Also, you will get to choose exterior colours and materials for your roofing, siding, windows, doors and masonry.

Parallel to your selections we apply for a building permit and demolition permit. The building permit will take between 2 and 4 weeks, and your demolition permit will take 6 weeks. Nevertheless, the demolition permit wait does not affect our process. Check the second part of this blog for more details on construction stages and times.
